Periculum was the incantation of a charm that allowed the caster to shoot red sparks from their wand.[1]
Effects[]
The sparks were firework-like in appearance,and had a vast range, shooting up to a great height, then hovering in the spot where the caster aimed. Much like a Muggle flare gun, the spell was used to signal that one was in danger, and thus in need of help.[1]
Etymology[]
Periculum is Latin for "danger".
Behind the scenes[]
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, this spell replaced the use of Red Sparks when Albus Dumbledore instructed the four champions to send red sparks into the air if they needed to be rescued prior to the Third Task of the Triwizard Tournament. Harry used this spell when Fleur Delacour was being dragged into the maze.[1]
- As seen in Vermillious (Trading Card), while Vermillious had been another known incantation, due to the film adaptation, Periculum was also commonly believed to be the incantation for Red Sparks mentioned in the book series. It wasn't until 2018 that Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery clarified Vermillious to be the correct incantation for Red Sparks.
